Any normal human, with no health condition, have the muscles kind of blocked or numbed during sleep because it's a normal reaction of the brain. When the humans are dreaming they are re-living (at list in some degree) past events and if we wouldn't have the muscles blocked or numbed the tendency is to do the things we are dreaming about. Do the dream tells you to duck, run or scream? Without this reaction of the brain one would do just that during the sleep. And probably nobody wants to do all those things in bad, in the middle of the night - that person would be the nightmare of his or her neighbors.
In this video, Justin from the Institute of Human Anatomy discusses the anatomy and mechanisms behind the parasomnia disorder known as sleep paralysis - that's more then just numbing the muscles. Justin explores how the brain enters this state and delves into the cultural associations of this disorder, providing insights to help us better understand its relation with anatomy and, of course, how to treat sleep paralysis, It's going to be a stunning one.
