Last orders: a pub crawl across the UK’s dying booze industry

Pubs are more than just places to get drunk – they occupy a unique space in the UK’s cultural landscape and provide a social hub for people across the class and wealth spectrum. The problem is that British pub, long a staple of community life, has been in a state of decline for years – and it’s getting worse and worse: in the year 2024 it's known that 400 pubs closed their doors. A record low number remain and with the average price of a pint now more than £5, the battle to survive is getting harder.

With alcohol consumption also in decline, and successive governments never keen to offer pubs a helping hand, can this great British institution survive?

The Guardian chapters are the following:

  • 00:00 – The famous Mumbles' Mile pub crawl
  • 01:17 – Two struggling London pubs
  • 04:18 – The west Midlands Desi pub tradition
  • 05:52 – A rural community saves its pub
  • 08:36 – The Bevy: a working class community pub hanging on

Deep sea mining: What’s the true cost of renewable energies? | DW Documentary

The idea is that electric cars, solar panels and wind turbines will reduce our consumption of coal, oil and gas and we all use them more or less in the next few years. However, these technologies rely on many raw materials present below the seabed because there are not enough resources for them on the ground. The race for deep sea resources has begun and countries with their companies are in it.

The immense demand for metals such as nickel, cobalt and copper for electromobility and alternative energy sources has so far largely been met in the south emisphere - in Africa, Asia and Latin America. But these deposits aren’t enough, many people's attention is now turning to the oceans. Here, it’s thought that vast deposits of the metals exist below the seabed. A geopolitical race has begun between states to exploit these resources and DW is telling us more about it. Extraction of the metals threatens to cause major ecological damage so take care about the nature.

Which country has the best education in the world?

You may want to live in the most educated, most healthier and most wealthier country in the world but this may not be the case even if you are the the most educated, most healthier and most wealthier person in your area. Let's find out more about the subject watching the BBC video.

On this episode of BBC's The Global Story, Lucy Hockings speaks to the BBC's Sean Coughlan and Professor John Jerrim, from University College London, about which countries have the most successful education systems in the world and what others can learn from them.

Every few years, countries around the world compete in global rankings to see which nation is deemed to have the best school system in the world. On which place your country is? Ask and tell us. Schools in Asia often get the best results, and other countries like Estonia and Canada are also highly praised. But in many parts of the world there are often huge barriers to getting children into the classroom at all, such as poverty, climate change, and war. Watch the video and find out.

A good education can help change lives, but some children face huge barriers so take care of your education and your family education.

Can Pollution Help Fight Climate Change?

People are getting sicker and sicker and pollution is one of the reasons. Aerosols, while harmful to human health at ground level because they are slowly killing us, can also reflect sunlight and cool the planet—raising the controversial question: can we deliberately inject them into the stratosphere to fight climate change? This StarTalk Plus interview explores the science and ethical implications of that possibility, so you better watch it carefully. Can you think about how to help yourself while helping the planet?

Why Chronic Disease Is Exploding!

The number of humans on Earth is estimated to 8,2 billion but more and more humans are getting sick and sicker. Chronic disease is increasing and you may want to know more why. In this profound and eye-opening episode of The Dr. Hyman Show, Dr. Mark Hyman sits down with social philosopher and strategist Daniel Schmachtenberger to dissect the root causes of the chronic disease epidemic.

People are not just getting sick; we are being made sick by the very systems we've built in the last century. The conversation moves beyond surface-level health advice to uncover the deep-seated reasons why humanity is facing chronic illness, from diabetes to dementia, and what it truly means to reclaim our health and agency in a world that often profits from our sickness.

The discussion also confronts the failures of our "sick-care" system. Dr. Hyman and Daniel expose how medical statistics can be misleading , why the current paradigm often fails to address root causes , and how the system itself can sometimes cause more harm (iatrogenesis). They contrast this with the principles of Functional Medicine, a revolutionary approach that seeks to understand the complex web of causes—from hidden infections and gut imbalances to nutrient deficiencies and psychological stress—and provides a roadmap for creating health rather than just managing symptoms.

This The Dr. Hyman Show episode is a call to action: stay healthier, get healthier, live longer, live your life better. It’s about understanding the systemic rackets at play, breaking free from the "derealization" and learned helplessness that keep us stuck, and taking back control of our health. It offers a crucial lens on the systems shaping our well-being and provides tangible steps to build a future where prevention and true health are prioritized for everyone.
